We’d like to thank everyone for the enormous amount of love you are sending in all forms. Tammy, Jordan and David are all so appreciative of your support during this time. For many, Katie’s peaceful passing is still a difficult reality to acknowledge as she was delightful part in many of our lives.
It is hard to imagine that just two weeks to the day before her passing, Katie had the strength to have some of her girlfriends over to celebrate her 44th birthday. She was able to hang out in the dining and living rooms for most of the night, enjoying the company and conversation, only needing to take a brief break once. I love this picture of her representing 44 so well, and it speaks to Katie’s spirit of making the best of tough situations.

And a week prior to that Katie was so proud of her love Nate for his graduation from JCC Preschool, and his getting ready for Kindergarten this fall. She would always seem to find a bit of extra energy when Nate arrived at the house and said his distinctive, jovial “Mommy??!!” when entering the door. Moms do seem to tap into a well of magic energy, putting aside their own issues to focus on their children, and Katie was no different even with her challenges.

We usually celebrated Katie’s birthday at a local lake, where Katie on two different years swam across the lake and back (a mile swim) to mark the milestones. For last summer’s swim it turns out Katie had a hole in her right femur from bone cancer we didn’t know about at the time. She was a rockstar with a go-go pace and swimming brought her peace and accomplishment. Nate and Katie would play for hours in the sand and water (and canoe) with the friends and kids who joined us on the birthdays, and other trips to the beach too.
Katie was a truly loving and adoring person, who stood for the right in the world. I haven’t yet watched her funeral ceremony online again yet, but the gracious friends who spoke about Katie and the impact of her life did a great job of honoring the one we all held so dearly. May those words help us remember Katie and inspire us to continue her kind and passionate ways.
We love and miss you, Katie.
